Studio Policies
I. LESSONS:
For most students, it is best to have 1 (one) hour-long lesson a week. For the young and very young student, I can start them at 45 or 30 minutes, depending on their age.

Lesson times are scheduled at the mutual agreement of the teacher and student (and their parents), subject to open lesson times.

Please contact me for the current lesson fees.

I provide the materials at the first lesson (2 music books and a music notebook for a one time fee of $15.00). After that, I will get additional music and the cost will be added to the next month lesson fee.

Please arrive on time and bring all of the materials including all music books, notebook, cello and bow.

It is highly recommended that each student bring a recording device, preferably a video camera or digital recorder to each lesson.

I strongly recommend that all of my students take weekly lessons (I am happy to teach highly motivated students 2 lessons a week if they are interested). Weekly lessons provide the
opportunity for steady progress and to quickly catch and correct any issues that need to be addressed. However, I will teach lessons every other week if that is the best option.

I prefer that the lessons for the month be paid in full on the first lesson of the month and no later than the 15th of the month. Other arrangements can be made between the student (or student’s parents) and me, if it is necessary.

Missed lessons can be made up within 30 days from the missed date either by scheduling a mutually-agreed-upon day and time or by adding a half hour onto 2 later lessons.

Please make every attempt to give me 24 hours notice if a lesson must be missed. Lessons canceled on the day of the lesson will be made up at the discretion of the teacher. I will make every attempt to make up lessons due to emergencies or sickness as soon as possible.

If I must miss a lesson, the student will be given a make up lesson.

The monthly payment will be reduced if notice of planned vacations is given by the first of the month.

If lessons are terminated before the end of the month, the payment will not be reimbursed.

If a check is returned by the bank, the parent of the student or the adult student will be charged the bank fees.

II. PRACTICING:
Daily practice (or a minimum of 5 days a week) is essential. The consistency of daily practice is the key for every student’s progress. For the young beginning student, 15 minutes a day is a good start (better yet: 10 -15 minutes twice daily). By the end of 6 months, the student should be practicing 30 minutes a day, and as the student grows and improves, practice time should increase to at least 1 (one) hour a day.

There is a direct correlation between progress and the amount of and consistency of practice!
(Suggested reading: This is Your Brain on Music by Daniel Levitin).

III. PARENT INVOLVEMENT:
For the young student, it is very important that a parent attend each lesson to listen and to watch. The more the parents are involved in giving help and supervising practicing, the better it is for the student’s progress.

If siblings are attending the lessons, they must remain quiet in the studio.

Please notify me if there are any health problems I should be aware of and, if it should be necessary, whom I should notify in the case of an emergency.

I am always open to thoughts and suggestions! But as the teacher and professional, I will have the final authority on repertoire and pedagogical matters.

IV. PERFORMANCE CLASS:
I have a monthly performance class from September to June for all of my school-age students. It is held on Saturday afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30. I don’t go so far as requiring my students to attend, however I very strongly recommend that all of my students make every effort to attend all or at least most of these classes! It is a very important part of the learning process for every musician to play for and to listen to each other.

My wife will be attending all or most of the performance classes to play the piano with each student.

The fee for each class is $25.00.

V. RECITALS:
My wife and I hold joint cello/piano student recitals twice a year; they are usually held at the end of January and the beginning of June.

All of my school age students are required to attend and play.

The performance classes are used as the dress rehearsals leading up to the recitals.

The recital fee is $25.00 for each recital.

VI. ADULT STUDENT WORKSHOP AND CLASS:
I have a workshop/class scheduled every other month throughout the year. The students play the music they are presently working on and we play cello ensembles. The fee for each adult workshop/class is $25.00.
